A very long time ago, deep in the forests of Northern Europe, in a small village at the edge of a beautiful lake, there was a young woman who desired nothing more than to cook well but it seemed like nothing she did came out right. She tried and she toiled and again and again, her cakes fell flat and her roasts were dry and burnt.

A kindly old grandmother fashioned for her a little poppet witch tasked with chasing away the dark and ornery spirits that lurked in the young woman’s kitchen. For as long as the kitchen witch watched over her kitchen, the young woman’s cakes were light and delicious, and her roasts were tender and flavorful.
